Tips for Getting Active

Take the first step to achieving good health by walking. Walking is the simplest way to start and continue a fitness routine. It costs nothing and has the lowest dropout rate of any type of exercise. Walking can be safe and easy

Why it works:

  • Research has shown that for every hour of walking, life expectancy can increase by two hours

  • 30 minutes of walking a day provides benefits for heart health

  • Walking is the most effective form of exercise to achieve a healthy heart

Try these tips for increasing physical activity no matter where you are:

Get physical activity in the comfort of your own home- you can even combine exercise with other activities you enjoy, such as reading or watching television

  • Walk around while talking on the telephone 
  • Mow the grass or garden
  • Go for a short walk before or after meals
  • Walk or bike to the corner store instead of driving
  • Spend time on your stationary bike while reading or watching TV

Look for opportunities to get active and have fun at the same time.

  • Plan outings that allow you and your family to be active (hiking, swimming, etc.)
  •  Enjoy sightseeing while walking or bicycling
  • Join a fitness club or recreational group
  • Walk while golfing instead of using a cart
  • Play racquetball or tennis
  • Rent a rowboat on a trip to the lake
